Environment

Detailed environmental work was carried out both on the Airfield site and in the surrounding area to inform our proposal.  This detailed Environmental Impact Assessment undertaken for the project considered potential effects on:

  • Local birds and ecology
  • The landscape and visual receptors e.g. houses
  • Ground conditions and hydrology
  • Noise levels in the local area
  • Traffic and transport
  • Aviation and telecommunications interests
  • Cultural heritage (listed buildings and scheduled ancient monuments)

The ecological studies conclude that the proposed wind farm would not have significant ecological impacts.  Similarly no significant effects are predicted on archaeology, cultural heritage, geology, hydrology, flood risk or telecoms links.  If there are any effects on TV reception the wind farm operator would pay for the technical solutions necessary to resolve any such problems.

Traffic generation would mainly occur over the 8 month construction period with 354 return HGV trips expected over the course of the busiest month (including all deliveries).  Once operational, the wind farm will require little maintenance and only small vans would normally be necessary to visit the site.

The wind farm has been designed carefully so as to ensure strict noise guidelines would be complied with and to ensure residents amenity is protected in line with this.  Although only likely to occur very infrequently within c900metres of turbines, shadow flicker would be prevented through mitigation if it did occur and cause any concerns for local residents.

The assessment also found that suitable distances are maitained between turbines and local homes and that the wind farm would be a positive and ultimately reversible addition to the local scene.

Although clearly visible in the local area, beyond c1-2km, the locally characterising landscape effects of the wind farm would diminish.

The final Environmental Statement produced describes the effects of the proposed scheme.  This together with supplementary information informed the decision to approve the wind farm taken by the Planning Inspectorate.
